9. The exact meaning of a_li s^a papanu is uncertain. For papanu as “eastern”, see Maidman 1976: 412 n. 740; Andrews 1994: 2: 120, 201. Occurrences: JEN 246:8; 256:9; 615:9; 858:12. Cf. papahhu “east” (Steele 1941:286). Otherwise, the word may derive from Hurrian papa- “mountain”, hence “mountain town”.
